Next of a couple of questions I got. We give peers a vast amount of prestige in the Society. What do the peers do to earn it?
Das muss ich erst einmal übersetzen. „Wir verleihen den Peers ein hohes Maß an Prestige in der Gesellschaft. Was tun die Peers, um es zu verdienen?“
Wikipedia sagt:
Prestige bezeichnet den Ruf (Leumund) einer Person (…) in der Öffentlichkeit eines bestimmten kulturellen Umfeldes. Umgangssprachlich wird Prestige oft gleichgesetzt mit einem sehr guten Ruf (hohe Reputation, sehr gutes Image). Das Wort ist eine Übernahme des französischen Wortes prestige (Ansehen bzw. Geltung) und rührt aus dem Lateinischen her (praestigium, Vorzeichen, sowie praestigiae mit der Bedeutung Gaukelei, Blendwerk).
Das Prestige eines Akteurs (…) zählt zu den sogenannten kulturellen Ressourcen (soziales Kapital). Ein höheres Prestige ist mit einem höheren Status verbunden und kann die Möglichkeit bieten, an Einfluss und Macht zu gewinnen. Tja. Uff. Also. Prestige ist in meinen Augen ein sehr schwieriges Thema, was peerage angeht oder auch generell Menschen in der SCA.
Ich stolpere ein bisschen über den ersten Satz „We give peers a vast amount of prestige„. Tun wir das? Ich habe ein bisschen drüber nachgedacht und mich gefragt, an welcher Stelle mir so etwas aufgefallen ist.
Jetzt im ersten Moment ist mir noch nichts dergleichen aufgefallen. Das kann aber natürlich auch daran liegen, dass ich seit 10, 20 Jahren hauptsächlich in Deutschland spiele, und dass es deutschlandweit per se relativ wenige peers gibt. So ist zumindest meine persönliche Wahrnehmung. Peers waren im Normalfall diejenigen, die schon länger dabei sind, die sich ein bisschen besser auskennen. Ich tue mich aber schwer damit, zu behaupten, sie hätten ein besonderes Prestige gehabt. Von daher weiß ich gar nicht, ob ich die Frage in dieser Form so beantworten kann oder nicht noch ein bisschen mehr Input brauche. Also wenn ihr Ideen habt, dann schreib mir doch gerne etwas dazu in die Kommentare, damit ich ein bisschen mehr sortieren kann, wie die Richtung dieser Frage ist.
Ansonsten kann ich natürlich so tun als wären alle SCA peers tolle Leute, die auf irgendeinem Sockel stehen und tolle Dinge tun – aber das will mir ehrlich gesagt nicht über die Lippen. Auch weil ich es für sehr kontraproduktiv halte. Das heißt nicht, dass man sich nicht mit Leuten freuen soll über Dinge, die sie gut machen oder die sie erreichen; das heißt auch nicht, dass man nicht tolle Leute in der Society beachten soll oder ihnen einen Anhänger, ein Merkmal irgendeiner Art geben soll, aber … Prestige?
Letztendlich kommt es dann eben doch immer auf die einzelnen Personen und Akteure in ihrem jeweiligen Umfeld an.

Prestige refers to a person’s reputation (…) among the public of a particular cultural setting. Colloquially, prestige is often equated with a very good reputation (high reputation, very good image). The word is a takeover of the French word prestige (reputation or prestige) and comes from Latin (praestigium, omen, as well as praestigiae with the meaning jugglery, dazzle).
The prestige of an actor (…) belongs to the so-called cultural resources (social capital). Higher prestige is associated with higher status and can offer the possibility of gaining influence and power. Well. Whew. So. Prestige is a very difficult topic in my eyes, as far as peerage is concerned, or people in the SCA in general.
I stumble a bit on the first sentence „We give peers a vast amount of prestige“. Do we? I thought about it a bit and wondered where I noticed something like that.
Saying this, at a first glance, I haven’t noticed anything like that. But of course, that could be because I’ve been playing mainly in Germany for 10, 20 years, and there are relatively few peers per se throughout Germany. At least that’s my personal perception. Peers were usually those who have been around longer, who know things a bit better. But I find it difficult to claim that they had any particular prestige. So I don’t know if I can answer the question in this way or if I need a little more input. So if you have ideas, feel free to write something about it in the comments so I can sort a bit more what the direction of this question is.
Otherwise, of course, I can pretend that all SCA peers are great people who are on some pedestal doing great things – but that honestly doesn’t want to cross my lips. Also because I think it’s very counterproductive. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t rejoice with people over things they do well or accomplish; that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t notice great people in the Society or give them a tag, a feature of some kind, but … prestige?
In the end, it always depends on the individual persons and actors in their respective environment.
